Hakka Heritage & Culture Day - Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024

Why is our Hakka Heritage & Culture Day on Sunday, Nov. 17th important?  It is just a one day event, and only from noon - 5 pm, but it may spark a conversation with your children and grandchildren about their heritage and culture.  It is vital as it fosters a sense of belonging and passing down knowledge to future generations.

Listen to Jephina Barkie as she talks about her visit to her Po Po and Gung Gung's villages in China.  She will share how it deepened her connection to her heritage and explore her roots.  Keith Lowe will introduce the topic of Gah San and you will watch a video of what it is all about, what is happening now and the tradition behind it.

Children will make a Chinese drum with Christine McNamee and see the difference between a North American one and the one they are making.  Shirley Wong will paint a picture from start to finish under your watchful eye, and you can get a Chinese name and learn how to write it with Fanny Poon.  Rose Wong will show you how to make lopet ban and Peter Wong will do a demonstration of how to make joong, otherwise known as sticky rice.

You will be able to buy a Hakka lunch and hot sow bow and lopet ban will also be on sale, and it is free admission to your Hakka Heritage & Culture Day.
